Portslade Cricket Club has announced plans to build their base at the Sir Rod Aldridge Cricket Centre in Falmer from next year.
Construction of the £1.8m cricket centre in the grounds of Brighton Aldridge Community Academy began last month and is due to be completed in spring 2016. From then Portslade, who’s current ground at Benfield Valley cannot be bought up to the standard required to compete in the Sussex Premier Division, will play their home first and second team games at the Centre, which will also become the club’s training base.
The Centre will also be home to the Aldridge Cricket Academy, a partnership between Brighton and Portslade Aldridge Community Academies and the Sussex Cricket Board, supported by Sussex County Cricket Club. The new facilities will include:
- three lanes of indoor cricket nets with full run ups
- full service gym for strength and conditioning
- a Premier League standard cricket square
Portslade CC’s Development Officer Andy Glover said: “The indoor school will provide state of the art training facilities for the whole club which will support the five year development plan that we have in place. The colts section is key to the progression of the club and has underpinned the success we have witnessed over the past four years, with 90% of the 1st XI squad being made up of players that came through the colts section. The indoor school will allow us to provide a structured training programme for all the colts in a purpose built facility to support their development as cricketers. We will also be working closely with the ACA to provide students with the opportunity to play cricket in a club environment.”
Sussex pacemen Tymal Mills and Jimmy Anyon joined Andy, SCCC officials and Aldridge Cricket Academy students and staff to mark the beginning of construction of the new building last month. Anyon described the centre as “An unbelievable facility for any school never mind a state school. The indoor centre run ups are longer than the ones at Hove! It will be one of the best facilities in the country I’d guess, not just in Sussex.”
Sir Rod Aldridge said: “I am delighted that Portslade CC and its players are joining us in this venture and will benefit from these facilities. Working with Sussex CCC we are building a top class cricket facility which will be a wonderful asset for the development of young cricketers in Sussex, including the students of the Aldridge Cricket Academy from BACA and PACA, and Portslade Colts.”
“Portslade CC is recognised as a well-run and ambitious club, working to build upon the tremendous successes it has had to date. On a personal basis, I am extremely pleased by this partnership, as many years ago as a young man I played for Portslade CC.”
